The Lion's Share

 Author: Aesop

Once upon a time, Lion decided to go hunting, and he invited Fox, Jackal, and Wolf to join him. They eagerly agreed, excited for the adventure ahead. As they ventured deeper into the forest, their eyes sharpened, searching for prey.

After a long pursuit, the group successfully caught a majestic Stag, bringing it down with their combined efforts. Now, they faced the challenge of dividing the spoils.

Lion, with his authoritative presence, roared, "Quarter me this Stag!" The others skinned the Stag and divided the meat into four equal halves.

Lion positioned himself dominantly in front of the carcass. He began distributing the portions, "The first quarter belongs to me as the King of Beasts. The second is mine as the arbiter. Another share is for my role in the chase."

Wolf, Fox, and Jackal exchanged glances, sensing an unfolding injustice. When Lion mentioned the fourth quarter, he issued a daring challenge, "I would like to see which one of you dares to touch it."

Wolf, daring and brave, finally mustered the courage to speak, "But Lion, shouldn't the fourth quarter be divided equally among all of us? We each contributed in some way."

Lion scoffed, dismissing Wolf's concern. "Might is right. I decide who gets what."

With a heavy heart and a lesson learned, the other animals understood that their king valued power over fairness. As they walked away, they pondered the real meaning behind Lion's words and hoped for a world where justice prevailed over force.
